The man with the thousand faces , this is how David Bowie is described in the media worldwide .And for once, the media treatment reflects without any exageration or provocation the artist and the man David Bowie was.
Yes, David Bowie made a work of art of his body, as a journalist said yesterday. Yes , but not only that, and I will go even further : he made his body a manifesto, reflecting his multiple personnality, his inspirations and aspirations. He obviously did not care about labels of any sort. He did not want to represent anybody in particular and yet, paradoxically, he inspired hundreds of thousands.To understand him well and to apprehend the social significance, nearly Political (note the capital "P") importance of his work, one has to remember of the context in which he started: 1969, the year of the Stonewall riots.  Let us recall that to declare one's  homosexuality or bisexuality in those days  was considered an offence up to 1981 in France, the  country of human rights.
Is it exagerated to say that Bowie was a transgressive artist ? No, surely not and yet, he was recognized by everyone as a formidable artist with an enormous mainstream success, which cannot be denied : 140 million albums sold ! His record covers, his Ziggy character and so many other performances, which were full frontal opposition acts against the conventions of the time.
When the media still made no mention of the gender theory which was not yet the ridiculous and inaccurate target of the hate predicators, he already had torn it up into shreds ! David Bowie was a precursor, an unmatched precursor . An artist who imposed his convictions to the world and who did it through art, obliging us to question ourselves. And to change.  Art is undeniably a vector of change and mainly of social change. Perhaps more than any other artist, Bowie showed it and demonstrated it throughout his career . 
At a time where hatred of people who are different is getting stronger in France and does not shock anyone anymore, I sincerely think that the celebration of an artist who broke the gender barreer, refused any label and any prejudice gives me hope and should give us all hope.

L’homme aux mille visages, voilà comment David Bowie est décrit dans les médias du monde entier. Et, pour une fois, le traitement médiatique reflète, sans exagération, hyperbole ou provocation, l’artiste et l’homme que David Bowie était.

Oui David Bowie a fait de son corps une œuvre d’art, comme le disait hier un journaliste. Oui mais pas seulement et j’irai même encore plus loin : il a fait de son corps un manifeste, reflétant son être multiple, ses inspirations et aspirations. Les étiquettes, manifestement, il s’en fichait. Il ne souhaitait être le représentant de personne et pourtant, quelque peu paradoxalement, en à inspirer des centaines de milliers. Et pour bien le comprendre et bien appréhender la portée sociétale, presque Politique (notez la majuscule !) de son art, il faut se souvenir du contexte dans lequel il a débuté : 1969, l’année des émeutes de Stonewall. Souvenons nous aussi que, alors qu’il se déclarait gay ou bisexuel dès cette époque, l’homosexualité était toujours un délit, jusqu’en 1981 en France, pays des droits de l’homme (sic).
De dire de Bowie qu’il était un artiste transgressif, est-ce exagéré ? Non, assurément pas et pourtant, il a été reconnu par toutes et tous comme un immense artiste avec un succès populaire plutôt conséquent, vous en conviendrez: 140 millions d’albums vendus ! Ses pochettes de disques, son personnage de Ziggy et tant d’autres performances, autant d’actes d’opposition frontale aux conventions de l’époque.
Alors que la théorie du genre ne faisait pas les gros titres et n’était pas l’objet de ridicules déformations de la part des professionnels de la haine, et bien lui, il la faisait déjà voler en éclats ! David Bowie était un précurseur, un précurseur pour le moment inégalé. Un artiste qui a imposé ses convictions au monde et qui de ce fait via l’art, l’a interrogé, nous a interrogé. Et nous a transformé. L’art est indéniablement un medium et un vecteur puissant de transformation sociétale ; peut-être plus qu’aucun autre artiste, Bowie l’a montré, démontré tout au long de ces années de carrière.
A l’heure où en France, la haine de l’Autre est désormais ancrée dans les mentalités et ne suscite plus aucun sursaut, voir célébrer cet immense artiste qui a brisé la notion de genre, qui a refusé toutes les étiquettes, qui a dépassé tous les préjugés et bien, je vais le dire sincèrement, cela donne, cela redonne, de l’espoir !
